Q. Isn't the State Defense Force the same as the Militia?
A. No, and Yes. State Defense Forces are not entities of the federal
government. They are organized, equipped, trained, employed and funded according to
state laws and are under the exclusive jurisdiction of the governor. "State Defense Force"
is a generic term for all national guard auxiliary organizations formed legally under
United States Code Title 32. The Georgia State Defense Force is a legally
constituted element of the Georgia Department of Defense.
Q. Who can join the State Defense Force?
A. We welcome citizens of Georgia, between the ages of 18 and 64. Waivers may be made for those
over 64 with specialized skills.
Q: Do I have to go to boot camp?
A: No. The GSDF provides Initial Entry Training to new members, but it does not entail the
rigorous physical training of the Armed Services. We encourage volunteers to stay healthy and
physically fit, and some GSDF units do provide an organized fitness/wellness training and
monitoring program.
Q: Can I be called out of state?
A: To date, our troops have only served in Georgia. The GASDF is a volunteer
organization under the the same guidelines and principles of the Georgia National
Guard bound by Georgia Code Title
38. We are directed by the Adjutant General and the Governor of the State
of Georgia. While we cannot be "federalized" and placed under the command
of the President of the United States or to serve in a war zone, we can be
utilized at the discretion of the Governor in neighboring states during times
of crisis at the request of that State's Governor. On a strictly voluntary
basis (because of the level of training and proven professionalism of the
GASDF), and as needed, the potential exists to be placed under the direction
of a United States Army Command (SOUTHCOM, NORTHCOM, etc.) to serve in a non-war
crisis such as the Haiti earthquake of 2010.
Q: Will I carry a weapon?
A: No. Currently, the GSDF is not a "tactical" or armed, war fighting, or peacekeeping
organization. Members are prohibited from carrying firearms while wearing the uniform.
Q. I want to join the Medical Detachment but not the GaSDF, can I do that?
A. 1st Battalion Medical Detachment is a unit with-in the GaSDF. You have to become a member
of the GaSDF in order to serve with the Medical Detachment.
Q. I have no medical experience can I still join the GaSDF 1BDE Medical Detachment?
A. Yes by all means. We will be happy to have you join the Medical Detachment. As a non
credentialed member of 1BDE MEDDET we will give you many opportunities to be certified in
CPR, First Aid, Advanced First Aid and even as an EMT-I (Emergency Medical Technician
Intermediate Level). All of this plus more can be obtained at no cost and or reduced cost.
Q. I'm a CNA, RN, Physician or other licensed health care professional, what benefit is there
to me?
A. There are so many opportunities for licensed health care professionals
it's impossible to list them all, some are reduced cost ACLS, PALS, BTLS and
BCLS certification and recerts. Opportunities to earn free CE's and other
sanctioned continuing education units. Not to mention numerous chances to
practice your skills in a non hospital or non clinical setting.
Q. I'm a licensed health care professional, will I start off as a private? How is my rank
determined?
A. Depending on your license, certifications and years in your profession you could join as
a 2nd Lieutenant or higher. Rank (Non-Commissioned Officer, Warrant Officer, or Commissioned
Officer) is determined by an Appointment Board based on prior military service, educational and
occupational background, special skills, and interests. Final approval is issued by the
appropriate GSDF senior officer or the Adjutant General of the State of Georgia.
